A Calm & Happy Half-Term – Without Losing Your Sanity!
Half-term is here! That lovely in-between where routines go out the window, snacks become a full-time job, and “I’m booooored” echoes through the house. Sound familiar?
It’s a tricky balance—keeping the kids entertained without feeling like you need to be a one-person events planner. But with a little bit of structure (just enough!) and some simple resets, you can make this break feel fun, calm, and even a little bit easier.
Here are my favourite ways to keep half-term relaxed and enjoyable for everyone (yourself included!).
1. Keep a Loose Routine (Without the Overwhelm)
Kids thrive on knowing what’s coming next—even during the holidays. But that doesn’t mean you need a jam-packed schedule! A simple visual plan can help set expectations while keeping things flexible.
✨ Try This:
Each morning, let your child choose between two activities so they feel involved (and you avoid endless negotiations!):
🎨 A craft morning or a nature walk
📚 A library visit or a movie afternoon
🥪 A picnic in the park or baking some treats
Pop these choices on your Children’s Weekly Planner, and suddenly, the day feels a little more organised—without the pressure of a strict timetable.
2. Keep a Few ‘Reset’ Moments in Place
It’s tempting to let everything slide during half-term (who even knows what day it is anymore?!). But keeping a few consistent reset points can make the transition back to school so much easier.
✔️ Stick to a (loose) bedtime – Even if it’s later than usual, keeping a bedtime routine helps avoid overtired meltdowns.
✔️ Start the day right – A predictable morning routine stops the whole day from feeling chaotic.
✔️ Have a little quiet time – Whether it’s reading, puzzles, or a screen-free moment in the afternoon, this helps everyone recharge (including you!).
Think of these as your little anchors during the week—keeping things calm without being too rigid.
3. Help Them Handle Big Feelings
Half-term can bring big emotions—excitement, overwhelm, frustration when plans change… and that’s just us mums!
For kids, routine changes and social plans can feel like a lot, so giving them simple tools to manage their emotions can make all the difference.

Most Importantly… Be Kind to Yourself
Half-term doesn’t have to be Pinterest-perfect to be special. Some days will be lovely, and others might be pure survival mode—and that’s okay! If the kids are fed, loved, and (mostly) happy, you’re doing an amazing job.
Here’s to a fun, calm(ish) half-term! 💛
