Window of Tolerance
An interactive magnetic resource to support understanding of the nervous system and emotional regulation for children and adults. Slide the zones to see your window of tolerance widen and narrow, spot what drains and builds your capacity, and learn how to find your way back to calm from hyperarousal or hypoarousal. A visual, trauma-informed resource for home, therapy and schools.
Description
Window of Tolerance Board for Children and Adults
The Window of Tolerance Board is an interactive magnetic resource to support understanding of nervous system regulation and mental health. Grounded in the window of tolerance model developed by Dr Dan Siegel and expanded in trauma therapy by Dr Pat Ogden, it turns an invisible concept into something you can visualise, touch and process.
Through a trauma-informed, neuroscience-based lens, this hands-on board helps children, and the adults supporting them, understand their capacity: why some days they can ride the waves, and other days the smallest thing tips them over.
What you learn:
The calm sea in the middle of the board is the window of tolerance, the zone where we feel regulated, can think clearly, connect with others and cope with big feelings. Above it sits hyperarousal (fight and flight: racing heart, anger, panic, anxiety). Below it sits hypoarousal (freeze and shutdown: feeling numb, foggy, flat or far away).
Two magnetic zone pieces slide to make the window wider or narrower, showing how capacity changes from day to day. Capacity drainers (poor sleep, hunger, noise, worries, transitions) squeeze the window smaller. Capacity builders (movement, connection, rest, sensory breaks, co-regulation) open it back up. A floating friend magnet can sail calmly across the sea, or get tossed into the stormy waves or washed up on the sandy shore, so users can show exactly where they are right now.
And when an unexpected rock pops up in the sea? If the window is wide, there's room to steer around it. If it's narrow, that same rock can tip us straight into hyper or hypo. This simple analogy helps people understand why a small trigger can cause a big reaction, and shifts the focus from "behaviour" to capacity.
Why it works
Regulation starts with understanding. When children and adults can understand their own nervous system state, they can begin to notice it, name it and respond with the strategies that actually help, calming down when they're in hyperarousal or gently waking up when they're in hypoarousal.
The magnetic format means this isn't just psychoeducation on a worksheet. Users slide the zones, move their floating friend and choose their own drainers and builders, making it a genuinely interactive therapeutic tool for check-ins, reflection and building self-awareness over time. Every piece is dry-erase friendly, so it can be personalised for any child, family or client.
Each board comes with an A5 size 16 page guide full of activities, age adaptations and inclusive-use guidance.
Who it's for:
- Parents supporting children with anxiety, anger, meltdowns, shutdowns, burnout or sensory overwhelm
- Therapists, counsellors, play therapists and child psychologists using the window of tolerance in sessions
- ELSAs and emotional literacy support assistants in primary and secondary schools
- SENCOs, pastoral teams, social workers and occupational therapists supporting wellbeing and regulation
- Adults exploring their own stress, capacity and nervous system, and anyone working with children and big feelings who wants a visual, interactive tool

what's the difference?
metal
Printed onto 0.7mm thick aluminium, the board and picture magnets are a sturdy, smooth surface. Only the board attracts magnets and won't stick to magnetic surfaces. Great for displaying and heavy duty use.
flexible magnetic mat
Printed onto a 1mm thick magnetic rubber sheet with square magnets made from the same material. It's our lighter version that's great for travelling with, storing away or sticking onto magnetic surfaces.
